This consultation is used to determine the best way to determine what type of care is best suited to your needs, including whether a 5 week breathing rehabilitation course is suitable for your needs.

In this consultation we will attempt to determine what elements of health are most influential in your situation. Integrative breathing therapy has divided dimensions of dysfunctional breathing in to 3 categories; biomechanical, biochemical and psychophysiological. The relative contributions of these categories will influence the course of your treatment.

In this assessment will look at:

  • Outcome measures of dysfunctional breathing
  • Assessment of biomenchanical and structural factors such as posture, physical breathing patterns, examinations of the upper airway etc
  • Carbon dioxide levels and hyperventilation stress tolerance
  • pH, blood pressure and respiratory rate
  • Heart rate variability
These consultations are held one on one from our Beechworth clinic location.

Recommended from ages 16 and up.

Improving breathing patterns, strengthening and coordinating respiratory muscles and changing habits and behaviours are processes that benefit from careful, progressive and individualised practice. Through this 5 week course we will build from a basic level of respiratory rehabilitation through to more advanced practices that will make long lasting, resilient changes to your health function and wellbeing. This course is adopted from Dr Rosalba Courtney’s functional breathing retraining course which has been refined over decades of practice to deliver lasting outcomes.

This breathing rehabilitation course is applicable to a broad range of demographics; from advancing athletic sport performance to improving quality of life for elderly and disabled individuals. The common element is dysfunctional breathing. The respiratory system is profoundly influential for regulating all of our bodies systems of health and hence breathing retraining has the potential to benefit direct respiratory conditions such as asthma, snoring and sleep apnoea as well as respiratory related conditions such as autonomic dysfunction, anxiety, chronic pain and mental fatigue.

Please note that Comprehensive breathing assessment is a required prerequisite to this course to ensure its appropriateness.

These consultations are held one on one from our Beechworth clinic location.

General respiratory health classes of 5-10 persons held over approximately 1 hour include education and practice of gentle respiratory techniques aimed at improving airway health and adopting better breathing habits. These classes aim to help you develop functional breathing so you can feel stronger resilience, improved performance, better energy levels and improved general health and well being.

These classes are suitable for all demographics 16 years and older.

These classes will be held at several locations in Beechworth and Yackandandah including specific classes held for concession card holders.

These consultations specifically address the biomechanical elements of breathing dysfunction such as tightness of the neck and shoulders with overuse of breathing accessory muscles, tightness of the ribs and thoracic spine which limits breathing function and a range on of physical factors related to breathing.

These consultations include manual therapy, rehabilitation exercise and ergonomic advice that reduce the physical limitations of breathing and facilitate better better posture, movement and physical function.
